Hymen Reconstruction Surgery in Sugar Land, TX
The hymen is a thin tissue that partially covers the opening to the female vagina (birth canal). The presence of the hymen has long been considered a mark of virginity in women. The tissue of the hymen can cause pain and bleeding when it is torn during sexual intercourse, but some women may be able to have sex without tearing, so it isn't a clear indication of virginity.
Other factors, like exercise or tampon use can also cause the hymen to tear.

Hymen Reconstruction Surgery Considerations
A woman may decide to have hymen reconstruction surgery:
- As part of the healing process after incest or rape
- For religious reasons
- As part of the revirgination process and/or a gift to a spouse
- Prior to marriage if the hymen has ruptured from vigorous exercise, tampon use or previous sexual activity
Hymen Reconstruction Surgery Procedure
When the hymen ruptures or tears, it lays against the opening of the vagina. You may not always see it, but it's there. During hymen reconstruction surgery, your provider will bring the torn edges of the hymen back together and stitch them.
The procedure takes 30-45 minutes and only uses local anesthesia to numb the area. That means you will be awake during the procedure. If you are uncomfortable with the idea of being awake, ask your provider about general anesthesia. If you choose to be asleep, you will need to have the procedure at a surgical center.
Hymen Reconstruction Surgery Recovery
You will be able to go home once your hymen reconstruction surgery is completed. Some swelling and pain are normal and expected after the procedure. You may need to apply ice packs to the area to help reduce swelling and your provider will prescribe pain medication.
You should be able to return to work 2-3 days after your procedure. Just make sure you aren't putting pressure on the area. Activities like riding a bicycle, motorcycle or horse are not advised for several weeks.
Complete healing of the hymen can take 6 weeks. Your provider will advise you when it's safe to resume or start sexual intercourse or other activities.
