What is Endometrial Ablation?

During a typical menstrual period, the lining of the uterus is shed. This lining is known as the endometrium. This causes the bleeding during menstruation. For a variety of reasons, many women suffer from menorrhagia , which is the medical term for a heavy menstrual flow.

Excessive blood loss during menstruation can lead to:

  • Anemia
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent tampon changes, up to one per hour

Endometrial ablation is a special treatment designed to reduce menstrual bleeding or, in some cases, eliminate it entirely. Endometrial ablation is not for all women, however. Women who were very recently pregnant, wish to become pregnant in the future, or are at high risk for uterine cancer should avoid this treatment.

How Does Endometrial Ablation Work?

There are many different methods of endometrial ablation. Some versions of the treatment are performed in an office setting, while others may necessitate a hospital visit. Generally, all forms of endometrial ablation destroy the endometrium.

Most types of this procedure begin by dilating the cervix and inserting special tools that will ablate the endometrium. Different types of endometrial ablation include:

  • Electrosurgery
  • Radiofrequency
  • Hot saline fluid
  • Extreme cold

Regardless of how the procedure is performed, the desired result is generally the same: the endometrium will become covered in scar tissue, which will reduce or stop fluid from escaping the fallopian tubes. Some degree of cramping and minor pain is expected after the procedure and will subside.

The effectiveness of the procedure will vary depending on many different factors, including age and the amount of children that have been birthed. Because this procedure directly affects the reproductive system, it is not recommended for women who wish to have children in the future.
